BRWG's Mission

The Blue River Watershed Group (BRWG) was founded in 2004 by a group of local community members who were passionate about protecting and preserving the health of the Blue River Basin. Our mission is to promote, protect, and restore a healthy Blue River watershed through cooperative community education, stewardship, and resource management. We focus on the entire watershed, which drains an area of about 680 square miles covering all of Summit County and portions of Grand and Lake Counties. Join us in our mission to restore and protect the Blue River, a vital tributary of the Colorado River.

How BRWG's work impacts Summit County residents/environment

BRWG’s work improves water quality, restores damaged streams, and protects aquatic and riparian habitat throughout the Blue River watershed, benefiting both the environment and the people who live in Summit County. By coordinating restoration projects, monitoring river health, and implementing watershed planning efforts, BRWG helps address challenges such as historic mining impacts, changing streamflows, and increasing development and recreation pressures. These efforts support healthier, more resilient ecosystems and benefit our community that relies on the watershed for drinking water, recreation, and local livelihoods.

How community members can support or participate

Community members can support this work by volunteering, attending events, becoming members, or donating to help sustain restoration and conservation efforts across the watershed. Folks can check out our events calendar to sign up for an education, social, or fundraising event or volunteer at our monthly River Watch water quality sampling events. Generous donations are greatly appreciated and help fund hands-on restoration projects, water quality monitoring, and community education that keep the Blue River healthy for future generations.

Supporting Local Sustainability

Organizations like the Blue River Watershed Group play an important role in protecting the waterways that run through Summit County. From restoring river habitat and improving water quality to educating the community about watershed stewardship, BRWG helps ensure the Blue River remains a healthy and vibrant ecosystem for fish, wildlife, and people. Their work supports sustainable recreation, protects critical natural resources, and helps preserve the beauty of the Blue River Valley for future generations.

Garbage Gurus is proud to support BRWG’s work by sponsoring the organization and by donating time and trucks to help collect trash from volunteer checkpoints during the annual Blue River Watershed Cleanup each fall. Community partnerships like these help keep Summit County’s rivers and natural spaces clean and healthy for future generations.
